Sunday was a special day for the NBA as multiple players dropped their season-high scores. Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis and Darius Garland dropped their season-high scores on Sunday. Garland’s 51 points were league-high this season until the big man Joel Embiid scored 59 points against Utah Jazz. The game between Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleaveland Cavaliers was a close match but the Wolves beat the Cavs by 129-124.
In absence of Donovan Mitchell, Garland took the charge of offense but Cavs had a tough night as none of the Cavs reached even the 20-point mark. Garland converted 16 of his 31 field goals and hit 10 of 15 threes in the game in the loss. Speaking of his 50+ game Darius Garland said, “I didn’t even know I had 50 until I went to the bench,” Garland said. “No one told me and I wasn’t paying attention to anything, except trying to win the game.” He added, “That’s the great thing about this group of guys. No one cares about individual numbers. It’s all about the team.”
Garland’s Cavs teammate Kevin Love showered high praise on the guard for his incredible performance. Speaking about his performance, Love said, “Incredible performance, masterclass by Darius, and we’re hoping for many more of those out of him. That was just beautiful. He got to his spots, kept us right there and gave us a chance at the end, and that’s all you can ask.”
Garland is the fourth player in franchise history to score 50+ points a game. He has joined names like LeBron James who has scored 9 times, Kyrie Irving (twice), and Walt Wesley (1). His 10 threes have now become 2nd in the franchise history; one behind Irving’s team’s record. Despite Garland’s valiant effort, this was Cavs’ 4th loss in a row. The loss came without All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen. Mitchell has been dealing with his sprained right ankle and the big man Allen is out with a sore left ankle.
