One of the most underrated basketball players in history has always been Russell Westbrook. His resume speaks for itself. In Monday night’s game against Brooklyn Nets, he made another move in record books. Westbrook (8,972) surpassed Gary Payton (8,966) for No. 10 on the NBA’s all-time assists record.
“If somebody had told me 15 years ago, 20 years ago that you’d be top 10 in assists, I’d look at them like they was cr*zy,” Westbrook said after the game. “In the NBA, never dreamt of being in this position. Nor getting to the point to where I’m next to some of the greats. I’m just truly grateful and thankful for an opportunity to keep playing at the highest level and I don’t take any of that for granted.”
Overall, Westbrook had another inconsistent night. he also shot 5-for-15 from the field and committed six turnovers. He had a 1-for-4 field goal percentage and a 1-for-4 foul shot percentage with two turnovers in the fourth quarter as Brooklyn won comfortably.
The Nets improved to a season record of 31-19, which places them fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. Which is 4.5 games behind the Boston Celtics, who currently sit in the first place. The Lakers are 13th in the Western Conference with a 23-28 record, 2.5 games out of a postseason play-in spot.

The “playoff viability” of Russell Westbrook is a concern for the Lakers
