NBA insider reveals main reason behind Kyrie Irving’s decision to leave Brooklyn Nets

In a shocking set of circumstances, Kyrie Irving has asked the Brooklyn Nets for a trade. According to Sham Charania of The Athletic, the All-Star guard has informed the team that he needs to be relocated or he would leave in free agency.

“What’s happened in the last week or so is, I’m told, they’ve had contract extension negotiations. And, from what I’m told, a contract extension was offered to Irving that had some stipulations in it. And I’m told that his side was vehemently against any stipulations in an extension,” Charania said during a Friday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

Irving’s most recent argument with the Nets is only the latest chapter in a long-running tale. It started when he only participated in 29 games the previous year because he was COVID-19 unvaccinated. The team permanently suspended the eight-time All-Star earlier this season after he promoted an antisemitic movie and book on social media.

James Harden, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving were part of the dynasty-caliber Nets team that had been put together. That failed because Harden previously requested a trade to the Philadelphia 76ers last year. And also because Kyrie hasn’t spent a full season with the franchise since joining three years ago.

After the Kyrie Irving trade request, teams are interested in Kevin Durant

The NBA’s other teams are significantly more interested in the availability of Brooklyn’s star player Kevin Durant. Even more than they are in Kyrie Irving’s request for a trade from the Nets, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. It’s possible that Durant will leave Brooklyn as a result of Irving’s probable departure.

It’s unclear how Durant thinks about the situation right now. But given that he already requested a trade last summer from Brooklyn, there’s a potential he’ll do so once more. When Durant petitioned the Nets for a trade this past offseason, he named the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns as his top trade targets.

As he is now in the first year of a four-year, $198 million contract that he signed in 2021. Organizations will need to consider how to accommodate Durant should he become free in the future. If Durant is the final member of the Big Three to defect to Brooklyn, the trade deadline on February 9 will provide NBA fans with nonstop drama.
