The Boston Celtics will be without one of their best players, as Jaylen Brown has been ruled out with a finger laceration that he suffered in a freak accident at his home. Brown told reporters that he cut his hand on a glass vase that he knocked over while watering his plants on Thursday night. He needed five stitches to close the wound and said he was “p****d” about missing time.

Jaylen Brown, who is averaging career-highs of 26.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, said he expects to be back for the playoffs, which begin next week for the Celtics. Boston has already secured the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and will face the winner of the play-in tournament between the Miami Heat and the Atlanta Hawks.

Jaylen Brown’s injury is another setback for the Celtics, who have been dealing with injuries and inconsistency all season. Marcus Smart, their leader in assists and steals, will also miss Friday’s game against the Toronto Raptors with neck spasms. Smart has a pinched nerve in his neck and did not play in Wednesday’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Celtics will need more from their other star, Jayson Tatum, who has been carrying the offense lately. Tatum is averaging 30.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game and has scored at least 30 points in four of his last five games, including a career-high 53 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves last week.

The Celtics will also rely on their bench, especially their young guards Payton Pritchard and Romeo Langford. Pritchard, who returned from a heel injury that kept him out for four games, is averaging 4.7 points and one assist per game while shooting 33.1% from three-point range. Langford, who missed most of the season with a wrist injury, is averaging 7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in limited minutes.

The Celtics will have to improve their defense, which has been a weak point this season. The Celtics rank 13th in defensive rating, allowing 111.5 points per 100 possessions. They will hope to get Brown and Smart healthy and ready for the playoffs, where they will face tougher competition and higher stakes. The Celtics have reached the Eastern Conference Finals three times in the last four years, but have not made it to the NBA Finals since 2010.

The Celtics have shown flashes of brilliance this season but also signs of frustration and fatigue. They have been unable to string a complete game or a winning streak for long stretches. They have struggled to beat the elite teams in the league consistently.

The Celtics have a lot of work to do and plenty of questions to answer before they can be considered serious threats in the playoffs. They have the potential to make some noise, but they also have the risk of falling short once again.
