Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was surprised and honored to see his face on a new Lakers mural that was unveiled in LA’s Koreatown on Monday. The mural, which spans a whole building wall, pays tribute to some of the greatest Lakers players and moments of all time. But Abdul-Jabbar couldn’t help but point out how Kobe Bryant got a little extra attention than him and Magic Johnson.
Abdul-Jabbar, who is a six-time champion with the Lakers, was asked to address the crowd that gathered to admire the mural. He joked that it was a “sneak attack” as he didn’t know he had to speak, which drew some laughs. He also quipped about how Bryant had two images on the mural while he and Johnson were relegated to the side.
“It’s really wonderful to see this mural,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “Although, I am a little bit jealous that Kobe got two images, and me and Magic are over there on the side like that. What can you do?”
Abdul-Jabbar was referring to how the mural showed Bryant in both his No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys, which he wore during his legendary 20-year career with the Lakers. Bryant, who died in a tragic helicopter crash in 2020, is widely revered as one of the greatest players of all time and a hero in LA.

Shortly after the news of Bryant’s death broke out, Abdul-Jabbar shared a heartfelt video on social media, expressing his shock and sadness over Bryant’s death. Abdul-Jabbar said he met Bryant when he was a child and admired him as an incredible family man and a leader. He said Bryant inspired a whole generation of young athletes.
“It’s very difficult for me to put in words how I feel about the loss of Kobe Bryant,” said Abdul-Jabbar. “[He was] a leader in a lot of ways… He inspired a whole generation of young athletes.”
