Kevin Durant has found himself in the Hurricane, as the Nets are slumping in absence of one of its best players. The Brooklyn Nets have been in the headline this season for all the wrong reasons. From Kyrie Irving‘s controversy of anti-Semitism and the firing of head coach Steve Nash to the suspension of Kyrie Irving, things have been tough for Durant and Nets. Recently NBPA’s vice-president Jaylen Brown and Lakers’ superstar LeBron James came hard against the terms for Kyrie’s return to the team by the Nets.
Things though seem to be turning around and the hope of Irving’s return is nearing. NBA insider, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Kyrie Irving could return as soon as Sunday. He wrote on Twitter, “Suspended All-Star guard Kyrie Irving is nearing completion on the process needed for a return to play and could rejoin the Brooklyn Nets as soon as Sunday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.” This is good news for the Nets and Durant, as they try to hold their fort in the Eastern Conference.
Durant expressed his frustration over the team’s performance in the past few days. Durant was critical of the Nets failing to do enough and giving him a bad roster. Speaking of the Nets’ starting line-up, Kevin said, “Look at our starting lineup. Edmond Sumner, Royce O’Neale, Joe Harris, [Nic] Claxton, and me. It’s not disrespect, but what are you expecting from that group?” Speaking of championship expectations, Durant added, “You expect us to win because I’m out there. So if you’re watching from that lens, you’re expecting us to play well because No. 7 is out there.”
Could Kyrie Irving’s return change Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets’ fortune?
The return of Kyrie Irving and his reunion with Kevin Durant is much awaited as the fans expect the Nets to change their fortune. Irving was averaging well over 28 points this season before being suspended. Kevin Durant has been balling again with the Nets. He has been averaging 30.3 points this regular season. However, even when Kyrie was on the floor with Durant the Nets had one of the worst records in the league. Despite Kyrie’s controversy regarding his anti-Semitism and vaccination, Durant has been largely silent.
Moreover, there are a few questions that need answers. Could Kyrie Irving return to the Nets and keep his focus on basketball till the season is finished? Since the Nets have one of the worst defenses in the league, Kevin Durant has to do more on both sides of the floor. The question arises, would Durant be able to handle the extra work, especially after an almost career-ending injury? The answer perhaps is no, and neither it is advisable.
