Ever since Anthony Davis was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers after the 2018 season, he has been considered the one to carry the franchise forward after LeBron James decided to hang up his shoes. Davis has lived up to the expectations, but sometimes there is fear among fans, especially due to the inconsistencies and unavailability on the court, that the Lakers might need to switch their focus.

LeBron brought back relevancy to the Lakers franchise, and it was because of him that Davis was convinced to join the Lakers. The duo won the franchise a championship in 2020, and now, with LeBron being in his 21st year, it will be required of Davis to take the reins of the franchise. He would be expected to carry the franchise forward and help them achieve success by being the best player on the team.

LeBron was present during media day and talked about how Davis was the face of the franchise and that he has done enough for the franchise to be compared to the ones whose numbers hang from the rafters. LeBron said, “He is the face [of the franchise]… You look at all these [retired] numbers that surround this facility, all the greats that have come here, and AD is one of them.”

After last season, though, LeBron had expressed his desire to retire but ultimately returned for another season and during media day, told what made him change his mind.

LeBron credited Head Coach Darvin Ham and President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka for the inspiration. He also credited the front office for building a competitive team around him this summer, which will allow him to take a lesser role during the regular season and preserve himself for the playoffs. LeBron said, “The job that Coach Ham and Rob did inspired me… we got a really good team and did a great job in the summer.”
