Throughout the course of the league, there have been many blockbuster trades that have completely changed the course of the league. Trades like LeBron James to the Heat and Kevin Durant to the Warriors have completely changed the course of NBA history. Another trade that had the potential to change the league was the Chris Paul trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.
During 2010-2011, Kobe Bryant was one of the best players in the league. However, his individual success wasn’t enough for the Lakers. To aid him, the Lakers wanted to trade for Chris Paul. Paul, who was then with the New Orleans Hornets was set to be a Laker. However, then NBA commissioner David Stern personally stepped in and vetoed the trade.
In a recent interview, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said that upon hearing that Stern had nixed the trade, he proceeded to shout out David Stern. “Like 2010, we couldn’t sell the Charlotte Hornets franchise. The league had to take it over. Remember, there was the whole Chris Paul to the Lakers thing? And, the truth be told, I b*tched out David Stern, when that was going down. Because he had just told us the league was struggling…I’m like, ‘What the f*** are you doing?’“
Paul was later traded to the Clippers, a neighbouring Los Angeles team. From there he’s been traded to several teams including, the Houston Rockets, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Phoenix Suns, and most recently – the Golden State Warriors. Throughout his career, he has never won a ring. He hopes coming to the Bay Area this season will change that.
Why was the Chris Paul trade vetoed?
In 2010, the New Orleans Hornets owners, George Shinn and Gary Chouest, were looking to sell the team. Unfortunately, they were unable to find any buyers. In the end, the NBA stepped in, buying the franchise themselves. This meant that the league had complete control over the franchise.

According to Stern, he vetoed the trade because it was not in the Hornets’ interests. Despite all this, the decision was still reviewed by the league. In the end, the decision was withheld and Paul was traded to the Clippers instead of the Lakers.
Fans are still angry to this day about Stern nixing the trade. To think of what could’ve been. A duo of Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant would’ve taken the league by storm. Paul is currently with the Warriors. He still has excellent teammates and perhaps this could be the year he wins his first ring.
