“Lotta BARK, NO BITE,” Memphis Depay calls out Charles Barkley after Netherlands humiliate United States in 2022 FIFA World Cup
Charles Barkley, Memphis Depay
Following the Netherlands‘ 3-1 victory over the U.S. men’s national team in the World Cup Round of 16, Memphis Depay decided to respond to Charles Barkley. The former NBA star and current basketball analyst had started some lighthearted trash talk before the USMNT’s match versus the Netherlands. Following their victory, Depay retorted at Barkley on Twitter in a hilarious way.
Prior to the World Cup matchup with the Netherlands, Charles Barkley was one of many Americans exhibiting exuberant, perhaps crazy optimism for the U.S. men’s national team. However, he may have been the only one who caught the Dutch public’s attention.
The NBA Hall of Famer and TNT basketball pundit made waves on Tuesday when he predicted that after the Americans defeated Iran to advance out of group play, they will overcome the Netherlands in the Round of 16. But the events that followed were quite theatrical.
Dutch star Memphis Depay wouldn’t even let Barkley overlook the fact it after his tape went viral before Saturday’s Netherlands’ 3-1 victory over the United States to advance to the World Cup Quarterfinals. Depay wasn’t satisfied with defeating the USMNT after the game as he also wanted glory over Barkley.
Depay proceeded with his social media ambush by posting a Chuck meme. His Twitter post was captioned: “Lotta bark, no bite,” which was aimed directly at the Round Mound of Rebound. The tweet was merely some friendly banter so that Chuck could stop predicting things just like he always does in the NBA.
Memphis Depay and the Dutch head to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World cup
Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay got the Dutch offense going at the opening. In the 10th minute, the Barcelona forward gave Louis Van Gaal’s team the lead, demonstrating his prowess once more as Matt Turner was helpless against the deftly executed side-footed finish. The second goal for the Oranje came in stoppage time of the first half from former Manchester United fullback Daley Blind, whose finish was quite similar to that of Depay.
Gregg Berhalter’s team trailed by two goals after the opening 45 minutes of play despite having 63% of the ball in the first half. A Christian Pulisic cross from the second half rebounded off Wright and went over Noppert for the USMNT’s first goal. The first two Dutch goals were provided by Denzel Dumfries. He was given credit for the game’s winning goal in the 81st minute, which put his name on the scoresheet and gave Holland the win.

Charles Barkley and his former comments on the USMNT beating Netherlands
Charles Barkley, a recently anointed USMNT superfan, made headlines this week when he vocally proclaimed his support for the Americans in the World Cup’s knockout phase. During an edition of Inside the NBA, Barkley stated: “We going [to beat] the Netherlands. We’re gonna open up a can of whoop ass!”
Later in the segment, he said: “I guarantee the Netherlands are in trouble. ….I want Spain. I want Brazil. I want Germany. I want Fra…oh they got that boy Mbappé over there with France he ain’t no joke. But we’re gonna beat the Netherlands.” Of course, Barkley’s errors are common, especially when they are made with confidence.
Memphis won’t be excessively worried by the criticism, especially from Barkley. He hasn’t had much of an opportunity to play for Barcelona, but he’s a key component of the Netherlands team that hopes to win their first World Cup. Depay and his group will now face Argentina in the quarterfinals, where they are likely to be the underdogs.
