Nia Long and her partner, the suspended Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka have decided to part ways. The news came days after she appeared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, opening up about her life after the scandal of Udoka having a sexual relationship with a Celtics employee broke the internet.
Long, 51, and Udoka, 45 were together for 13 long years and also have a son together named Kez. A representative for the Hollywood actress also confirmed that both are “no longer together but remain fully committed to co-parenting their son [Kez].” As reported by the sources, “the situation is unfortunate and painful, but Nia is focusing on her children and rebuilding her life,”
Earlier this week Nia opened up about the news that had her heart split into pieces and the life after the scandal. Besides struggling to cope with the news, she also recalled the heartbreaking sight of her son’s face. “I think the most heartbreaking thing about all of this was seeing my son’s face when the Boston Celtics organization decided to make a very private situation public,” said emotional Long. Long was heavily critical of the Celtics for making the affair public, which was hard on her and her son.
Since the news of her split from Ime is already in circulation, Nia issued her own statement and asked for her privacy in this difficult time as she focuses on her son. “The outpouring of love and support from family, friends and the community during this difficult time means so much to me,” the Hollywood actress said to People. “I ask that my privacy be respected as I process the recent events. Above all, I am a mother and will continue to focus on my children.”
Ime Udoka and Nia Long Relationship Timeline
While Udoka was a professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings in February 2010, the actress and the former head coach got to know one another. According to the Boston Globe, a mutual friend set them together while Long was in Boston filming a pilot for NBC and Udoka was competing against the Boston Celtics.
The former couple revealed that they were expecting their first child together in an exclusive PEOPLE story in June 2011. Long previously had a son named Massai from her previous relationship. On Nov 7th, 2011 their first child Kez was born.
Despite her over-decade-long relationship with Udoka, Nia was never a firm believer in marriage and was adamant that marriage wasn’t a priority for her. Speaking with Essence in August 2012, she said, she had “never seen a marriage work”. Moreover, her marriage didn’t define her successful relationship with Udoka. “I don’t feel less loved or less loving because I’m not married,” she said at the time. “I worked hard to have the career I wanted, but I’ve also been deliberate about my personal life. None of this is a mistake.”
While Udoka remains out of the NBA with suspension, the Celtics will reevaluate his situation once the season is over. So far into the season, the Boston Celtics under Joe Mazzulla have been performing better than last year in the regular season games. If the Celtics win the championship or reach the NBA finals, Udoka’s return to the Celtics as head coach window is perhaps closed.
