Kevin Durant and Shaq

Following the trade deadline that brought Rui Hachimura to the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille O’Neal, perhaps, took a jab at him. The NBA legend said that he didn’t know who Hachimura was. In his defense, he added that if one is not a top 10 player in the league, he doesn’t care. Shaq later apologized to the player, but called him “Rudy,” disrespecting the player all over again. Seeing this, Kevin Durant called out Shaq on Twitter again, publicly correcting him.

This week on his “The Big Podcast,” he not only misidentified the player, he even called Hachimura’s former team by their old name. “Let me apologize to Rudy Hachimura,” Shaq said. “I didn’t know who he was because I never watch the Bullets play,” he continued as he used Washington Wizards’ old team name.

Shaq added that the young man is pretty much a good defensive player and a great role player. “He’s giving me Rick Fox vibes. Tough, pretty good defender. … So Rudy Hachimura, I apologize I didn’t know who you were, I know you are now and I wish you well, and you’re doing great.”

Shaq’s use of an incorrect name is certainly a dig at the Japanese player, implying that he still doesn’t know who he is. Kevin Durant, once again, led the charge against Hachimura’s slander. He responded on Twitter to the Laker legend’s comments, “Rui*,” correcting Shaq.

Shaquille O’Neal says he doesn’t know who Rui Hachimura was

Earlier, when the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Rui Hachimura from Washington Wizards, Shaquille O’Neal said something that was a surprise for many in the league. “Albert Einstein said things you can get access to you should never memorize,” he began. “If you ain’t a top 10 player, I don’t know who you are, that’s no disrespect. How am I supposed to know who the kid was?

A different conclusion could be drawn from Shaq’s statement. Perhaps he didn’t appreciate the Lakers’ decision not to bring in shooters to surround LeBron James. On the other hand, it may be a jab at Hachimura’s game, which, despite his stature, lacks dominance.

However, since then, the Lakers have added shot-making players around James and Anthony Davis. The acquisition of D’Angelo Russell provides them with a greater shooting threat than Russell Westbrook. Other players, like as Mo Bamba, can provide more space for both superstars to dominate around the rim, allowing them more freedom to drive to the hoop. For many, the new Lakers can gradually evolve into a team to beat in the West, which is now stacked since the trade deadline.
