“Oops..please don’t put that” Spurs rookie Jeremy Sochan roasts Russell Westbrook with ‘BRICK’ remark

Jeremy Sochan, Russell Westbrook

Although Jeremy Sochan, a rookie with the Spurs, may not be well-known in the NBA, on Sunday night, a video of his interaction with Malaki Branham, another rookie, went viral. Russell Westbrook received harsh criticism from both fans and analysts during a controversial first season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Everyone’s tough on Westbrook, even for the arriving rookies who knew as much as everyone around the NBA that Brodie is a walking brick.

As the Las Vegas Summer League came to an end, the two players decided to have some fun and play a little game for the viewers. Simple enough: without seeing the other person’s piece of paper, one of them had to interpret what was written on it. When first-round pick Jeremy Sochan of the San Antonio Spurs was told that Westbrook receives a lot of them throughout the game alongside teammate Malaki Branham, he replied, “bricks.” Regrettably for Sochan, the answer was triple-doubles.

Is Jeremy Sochan right about Russell Westbrook in some way?

When the San Antonio Spurs picked the 6-foot-9 forward with the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Jeremy Sochan’s NBA dream came true. Sochan is a good fit for the NBA of today, since organizations seek flexibility as he models his style of play after Draymond Green, and while at Baylor, he was a versatile defender. Sochan was credited with helping Baylor defeat eventual champion Kansas in February by filling in at center. He was also praised for his passing abilities. The Baylor grad was heavily scouted and considered one of the greatest defensive talents in the draft. He is expected to be a great two-way player in the league due to his length and defensive abilities.

Recently, there has been much discussion about how poorly LeBron James and Anthony Davis blend in with Russell Westbrook. The joke was made during one of the past NBA Most Valuable Player’s poorest statistical seasons. Westbrook only averaged 18.5 points per game with the Lakers while shooting 44% from the field throughout the regular season. The 33-year-old is generally fading away from the level he reached with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Westbrook’s situation was not intended to be this way. Westbrook was experiencing a mini-career rebirth with Washington at the time of his trade. Westbrook’s outstanding second half of the 2020–21 season helped the Wizards advance to the playoffs but that didn’t happen with the Lakers.

Although Sochan’s comment was not intended to be taken seriously, Westbrook may mark the Lakers’ opening matchup with the Spurs on his calendar.  The response from Sochan does not come as a surprise to those who are aware of Westbrook’s reputation. It’s brutal, yes, but hardly startling. The Lakers star’s shooting efficiency has always been a huge worry, which is why Skip Bayless and other critics refer to him as “Westbrick”—a nickname that, of course, Russ disdains.

Jeremy Sochan ought to have respect for Westbrook, who has been selected to the NBA All-Star team nine times and has won two scoring titles. Westbrook is the 2017 MVP of the league and leads in NBA’s all time triple doubles. When Westbrook visits San Antonio in the upcoming season, he will learn the hard way what it means to be humbled. We can only hope that Westbrook will laugh it off. Nevertheless, Sochan should certainly hope that he won’t make a big issue out of it, especially in light of the claims that Russ may wind up in San Antonio to help with the Kyrie Irving trade to the Lakers.
