ESPN hired Tristan Thompson only recently. The 31-year-old Thompson made his NBA Today debut on January 26 and immediately created a name for himself by asserting that LeBron James should be considered for the MVP award if he could lead the Lakers to the sixth or seventh seed in the Western Conference. With Kyrie Irving’s trade request, he definitely couldn’t hold back his emotions.

Recently Thompson spoke with Max Kellerman on Kyrie Irving’s most recent trade request and why the Lakers, where LeBron James and he would be reunited, would be the perfect fit for him. Thompson even managed to make it known that he was open to the band reforming. The former Cavs player texted Irving after the trade rumors. Speaking on the matter he said, “I texted Kyrie, I said let’s get the gang back together.  he put a heart emoji, so I know he read it… Like I said, The band broke up a couple years too early, let’s get it back together.”

If the Lakers need to make a 2-for-1 trade for Kyrie, it appears Thompson is prepared to take a roster spot in Los Angeles. It’s not particularly surprising that he would be interested, but making the announcement in his second week of employment live and on-air on ESPN is undoubtedly a choice. Last season, Thompson played 15 minutes per game and averaged six points and five rebounds. He participated in 57 games overall with three different teams.

The Lakers may be feeling a little desperate to add another superstar to James and Anthony Davis. The Lakers are 12th in the Western Conference with a 25-28 record, despite the fact that they both rank in the top 11 in ESPN’s player efficiency rating measure this season.

Before the NBA trade deadline on February 9 the Los Angeles Lakers made a move, sending Kendrick Nunn, three second-round selections, and Rui Hachimura to the Washington Wizards. That transaction, though, does nothing to advance them into the title discussion.

However, it does suggest that Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and the rest of the front office want to be active at the trade deadline, presumably with the goal of assembling a team that will enable LeBron James to make another postseason run. James, who previously played alongside Irving, has been pleading with the Lakers to make a move in the trade market to increase their chances of contending for the NBA Championship.

Because they spent three seasons together with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014–15 to 2016–17, James and Irving are quite familiar with one another. Together, they captured the NBA championship in the 2015–16 season. With Anthony Davis in the squad, they would be unstoppable in the West.
