The Brooklyn Nets woes don’t seem to end. After having perhaps the best run in three years when they won 12 of their consecutive games, they are again down and unable to play some winning basketball. Perhaps the biggest disappointment and so the unpleasant surprise came from the bad performance by Ben Simmons. In Thursday’s game against the Phoenix Suns, Simmons was ejected from the game.

The officials called an illegal screen foul on Simmons on the offensive side of the floor. The All-Star player started to argue with the officials. Even after being held by his teammates, Simmons continued to argue. Consequently, Simmons was later slapped with two technical fouls, which resulted in his ejection from the game.

After the game, Simmons said the ref’s calls have been inconsistent regarding plays of such kind. “I think you’re going to call the game like that, then you got to be consistent. I think it’s been like that all year,” Simmons said. He also added that he wants to be aggressive on the floor and, the inconsistency of the calls has made it worse for him. “I think if you’re going to call it a moving pick, you got to be consistent on both ends. Same with the holding.”

In 2023 so far Ben Simmons has scored 10 points only one time in the season. He has been inefficient from both ends of the floor in the season. The trade from the Philadelphia 76ers was supposed to kill the Nets’ woes on the defensive side. So far into the season Simmons had played 33 games and had scored in two digits only 12 times.

One of the highlights of this season has been the calls made by the officials during games. There has been a substantial increase in the number of technical calls on the players and the coaches. Earlier in the season, the game officials ejected former Nets coach Steve Nash showing frustration with their call.

In a recent back-to-back game of the Los Angeles Lakers against the Dallas Mavericks and the Philadelphia 76ers LeBron James and the Lakers expressed their frustration over bad calls. Apparently, the game officials missed two crucial game-winning plays for the Lakers, which did cost them the Dallas game. Russell Westbrook was fouled in the next game on a game-winning shot. However, the refs didn’t feel the need to check the replays.

Simmons finished with seven points, six assists, four rebounds, and four turnovers in just 18 minutes of the game. Earlier, he had also finished a game with just zero points in the game. In absence of Durant, the Nets would expect their star player to ease Kyrie Irving’s burden. The Nets lost the game to the Suns by 112-117.
