The NBA All-Star week has officially kicked off at the Cleveland, with a series of exciting lineups and contests that we have all been waiting for. As usual, the contests were the 3-Point Challenge, Slam Dunk Contest, and a revamped Skills challenge. This year, things took a surprising turn with unexpected winners and an underwhelming dunk contest. But it was great to see smiles on the faces of the young participants ahead of the tough second half of the season.
With day one done and dusted, a very exciting All-Star game awaits to take place on Sunday featuring a set of new faces like Andrew Wiggins, Dejonte Murray, and a couple of other second-time All-Stars. The rosters are stacked with the league’s bests players at the moment. Happy for most yet sad for some as Kevin Durant misses his second All-Star game in a row.
The 2022 All-Star Slam Dunk was a bust and fans were not happy about it
Obi Toppin had finally won the Dunk Contest after battling it out last year. He topped things off with a fairly impressive behind-the-back over a person slam dunk. Juan Toscano-Anderson was a new face in the contest who also brought out his teammate and all-star starter Andrew Wiggins. He jumped over Wiggins while repping a Mexican-themed Golden State Warriors jersey. Other players included Jalen Green and Cole Anthony who put up a decent fight.
But with all honestly, this contest was very underwhelming as dunks that were seen before had been done yet again. The dunk contest has always been about creativity and fans would have witnessed it over the years but this was just an old tape played once again. Many believed that the older veterans should have taken part instead and Zach LaVine should have made his return.
Shaquille O’Neal reacts to boring Slam Dunk contest with a hilarious picture of himself
Veterans of the league were not merciful towards the young participants of this year’s Slam Dunk contest. For instance, let us take a look at how fans and other celebrities reacted to the players first.
If that was not brutal enough, Shaquille O’Neal, former Los Angeles Lakers legend reacted with a hilarious image of himself on Instagram captioned, “Wish I was here rather than that dunk contest.”
During his time, Shaq was one of the best in-game dunkers in the league. He was so dangerous while dunking that he shattered multiple backboards, broke the entire post and rims. The NBA had to enforce rules because of him. Aside from his comment, other players took to Twitter expressing their emotions and they were very honest, yet brutal.
