Ja Morant has dominated the news lately; however, not for reasons he’ll be proud of. The explosive point guard sparked controversy after an Instagram Live video, in which he displayed what appeared to be a gun while at a nightclub early Saturday morning. Following this, the Memphis Grizzlies announced that Morant is suspended for at least two games. This happened not long after the NBA launched an investigation into the situation.

The Grizzlies announced Saturday afternoon that Morant “will be away from the team for at least the next two games.” This means he won’t play against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday or the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

After the windstorm triggered by Morant’s escapades, he issued a statement in an attempt to calm things down. He said he takes “full responsibility for my actions last night.”

“I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire organization for letting you down,” the statement read. “I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”

Following the former Murray State star’s statement, Nike, which the Grizzlies star has a signature shoe deal with, also released a statement. “We appreciate Ja’s accountability and that he is taking the time to get the help he needs. We support his prioritization of his well-being,” Nike said.

The Grizzlies sit as the second seed in the Western Conference with a 38-24 record. Spearheaded by Morant, the squad has looked formidable throughout the season. However, the guard’s recent antics, along with Dillion Brooks’ one-game suspension and Brandon Clarke’s season-ending injury, might hinder the team’s season.

Ja Morant is having a career year and has established himself as one of the league’s finest point guards. In 53 games this season, he has averaged 27.1 points, 8.2 assists, and 6.0 rebounds. He has undoubtedly put his abilities and explosiveness on a show night after night while putting up these monstrous numbers.

However, due to the recent controversy, he has endured an avalanche of condemnation. Fans on Twitter were outraged as news of his latest scandal spread like wildfire. Seeing a professional athlete do such antics made many people fed up to their back teeth. Others chastised the guard and asked him to stick to playing basketball.

After serving his suspension, Ja Morant will hope to put this incident behind him and focus on the rest of the season. Nevertheless, if any last-minute developments happen because of the controversy, things could get dicey for the guard and the Grizzlies.
