“Won’t pay him $50 million a year,” Mike Sando reveals reason for Russell Wilson’s departure from the Seattle Seahawks
In a move that has shocked the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks have parted ways with their no.1 quarterback Russell Wilson ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The 33-year old quarterback earned himself a trade move to the Denver Broncos after plenty of speculation surrounding his future at the club.
However, after last season’s failure to reach the playoffs, the Seahawks are looking at a major upheaval in their ranks, which has already begun with the firing of several backroom staff.
Russell Wilson had 2 years remaining on his contract but there were murmurs of him being unhappy at the Seahawks
A reputed journalist, Mike Sando who follows the NFL, gave in his inputs on why the franchise took such a drastic decision. On the Athletic football show, Sandi said that his insane wage demands were the primary reason why he was let go, as the franchise wasn’t ready to pay him $50 million in his new contract in a year’s time.
“They have to get a different quarterback. I think, their calculus is this, they weren’t going to pay Russell Wilson $50 million in his next contract, which is what he would’ve wanted. I don’t know if you’ve noticed in the last year or so, there’s been a bit of dust and smoke kicked up by Russell Wilson and his camp,” Mike Sando said.
Sando continued, “He has 2 years left, so 1 year from now he’s in a contract year, and so it’s all he was talking about. What they’re saying is we’ve seen the best of Russel Wilson, and we’re not going to pay him $50 million or whatever to make him happy. We don’t think we can make him happy.”
Mike Sando felt that the Seattle Seahawks wanted something in return by making the trade this year, which would not have happened if they had made him stay on.
“Our choices now become let him play on for 2 more years and then franchise tags and all kinds of stuff or one year from now decide we’re not going to pay him that much and trade him, or you know what, we know it’s not going to be an extended marriage anyway, so let’s do it now and we can get something in return.”
