“Neither Tom Brady nor Aaron Rodgers, I would give it to…..”- Colin Cowherd makes a shocking pick for MVP

Colin Cowherd and Aaron Rodgers

The 2021 NFL MVP race has basically come down to two. Those two happen to be some of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. The race between the two this year is quite different from other years as Brady dominates the statistics but Rodgers took his team to the NFC’s #1 seed with arguably less talent around him.

Depending on which perspective you look at it from you could make a very solid argument for both of them. Colin Cowherd has a clear opinion on how the metrics have a factor but he has specific criteria that he thinks should determine the NFL MVP.

Not Tom Brady? Colin Cowherd makes his case for who should win the MVP

Colin Cowherd has said on his show, The Herd,I’ve compiled 7 categories that I think are the most important stats for a quarterback.” Those categories were as follows; passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions, completion percentage, yards per attempt, big pass plays (throws of 20+ yards), and passer rating. He added “to me, the MVP race, it can’t just start with wins, I mean Brady’s got 13, Aaron has 13 but they play in kind of lousy divisions. Joe Burrow has 10 but plays in a way better division. So, to me, 10 wins in Joe Burrow’s division is more impressive than Aaron or Tom winning 13 in their crappy division. So take the wins thing out of it.”

It’s a bold but frankly true statement. While historically the MVP has always gone to a player on a team that has won more games than most other teams, in this situation, all 3 are division winners and that should be enough for the wins discussion. He then proceeds to go into the stats and see who leads them. Surprise surprise, Brady leads the majority of them with yards, touchdowns, completions and big pass plays. Rodgers only takes one category, passer rating. And Joe Burrow? He took the remaining 2, completion percentage and yards per attempt.

Colin’s boldest statement however is saying”I would give it to Burrow because I think he’s done more with less. He has the worst offensive line in the playoffs, he’s got the worst roster in the playoffs. Arians won a super bowl, Matt Lafleur we know is great, we think Zac Taylor is good but he was lousy before Burrow. I would give it to Burrow, by an inch over Aaron or Tom.”

It’s certainly a shock to hear Joe Burrow being mentioned in the MVP race given how much coverage and attention has gone to Brady and Rodgers especially because at this point most of the media has said Rodgers will win it by a landslide but Colin does make a point. The personnel around Burrow simply isn’t as good as what Brady and Rodgers have. Both of them have managed to be protected pretty well and have superstar receivers in Mike Evans and Davante Adams as well as others around them. Joey B is able to lead 2 major passing categories and 2 pretty important ones that, can’t be written off.

He concludes the segment with a shot on the population that would be enraged if Rodgers doesn’t win it saying”But when I hear Aaron has to win or it was about you know what ‘shot in the arm’, it’s a bunch of nonsense.” It’s a strong statement but perhaps it is just as true as it is strong. With how politics find a way into everything nowadays, it may be a given that Rodgers wins the MVP on that alone. Of course, we know that NFL MVP voters love to vote for someone who wins a lot and that might be why Rodgers takes it, but if that isn’t the case and Brady or Burrow wins it, you can definitely agree with Colin Cowherd that they truly deserve it based on how they’ve played this season.
