“Six to eight months,” 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan identifies probable timeline for QB Brock Purdy’s return from injury

The San Francisco 49ers‘ quarterback problems from the 2022/23 season might not just be over yet. The 49ers suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles after quarterback Brock Purdy’s injury made him exit the gridiron.
Despite being a rookie quarterback, Purdy became a huge part of the 49ers’ success, as he had a rollicking start to life at the highest level. Taking over the quarterback reins from Jimmy Garoppolo, he led the side to 7 consecutive victories out of which 2 came in the playoffs and made a big claim for himself to take over the No.1 spot for the 2023/24 season.
However, his UCL injury during the NFC Championship game meant that he needed to undergo surgery and faces a long time out of action, as head coach Kyle Shanahan pointed out during the Annual League Meeting on Tuesday. Shanahan could not give out an actual date, as to when Purdy would return but felt that it would be improbable for him to achieve complete fitness before the start of regular season.
Brock Purdy faces a race against time to regain fitness before the start of regular season
“He won’t be able to do anything on the field for who knows? It could go anywhere from six months to eight months,” Shanahan said.“So, it’s all open like that. I think we’ll have a better idea they say three months out of surgery, they have a better idea of whether it’s going to be six months or eight months. So, I don’t know. It’s how it heals.“
“So, we’ll see in three months if he’ll be ready for camp. If not, we’ll possibly say hey, it’s going to be a little slower, Week One. I’m hearing at the latest Week Four. It’s all estimations and we’ll see what happens.”
Brock Purdy’s injury has meant that the 49ers will start with either of Trey Lance or Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback. For Lance, if would be a second shot at grabbing hold of the starting quarterback role at San Francisco 49ers, as he lost the spot due to injury last season.
Kyle Shanahan also clarified that the uncertainty surrounding Purdy’s return date was a big reason as to why the franchise roped in Sam Darnold on a one-year deal.
