Cooper Rush took over the starting quarterback position after Dak Prescott sustained a right rhumb injury in the Cowboys season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Cowboys went on to lose the game 19-3.

The Cowboys have been undefeated since then and have a 4-1 record with their latest win coming against the defending Superbowl champions, the LA Rams. When Rush took over, nobody expected the Cowboys to be in this situation, but Rush and the Cowboys defense have been the surprise story of the season so far. Rush has had 5 starts throughout his career and not lost in any of them. With Prescott expected to be back sooner rather than later, this leaves the Cowboys’ management in an interesting situation.

Dak Prescott is the franchise QB, the man who gets big bucks (~$40 million a year) to get the job done but Cooper Rush, an unheralded backup has led the Cowboys so well that there now is a fraction of Cowboys faithful and sports analysts who believe that the team from the Lone Star State should not tinker with a winning formula and let Rush continue as start even when Prescott returns.

While others believe that this team with an all world defense led by Micah Parsons is good enough as it is and changing the status quo might affect the team in a negative way. Prescott has had an up and down career, many have questioned whether he is the franchise QB calibre guy or not.

There is no doubt that on returning, if Prescott is made the starter, as Jerry Jones has indicated, he will be under a mountain of pressure to perform out of this world.


Whenever Dak returns, it will be on owner and general manager Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys top brass to decide which they want to go whichever route they go with. If the victory train derails, the Cowboys fans won’t be very forgiving.
