“Take a peek at his game”: Chiefs HC Andy Reid claps back at an unnamed Defensive Coordinator for his baseless criticism of Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes has been in some hot water lately, an anonymous defensive coordinator in the NFL stirred up quite the controversy after he claimed that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback plays “streetball” and that it is not a sustainable style of play in the league. Here’s the full statement for reference, “We love Mahomes because of his unorthodox throws, not because of his natural pocket presence. And when that disappears, that is when they lose games. I don’t think that is a (Tier 1) QB, I think that is a (Tier 2) QB. Nothing against the guy. I love the kid. But take his first read away and what does he do? He runs, he scrambles, and plays streetball.”

This comment received a lot of criticism from fans and other analysts, some of whom were in agreement with it but the majority of them disagreed with this. Mahomes definitely does have an unorthodox style of play but just because his play style is something that we have never seen, it does not mean that it is bad. Just think of this, before Michael Vick came into the NFL, we did not think that a quarterback could run with the ball and throw it accurately as well.

“He’s tremendous”: Andy Reid has nothing but praise for Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes produces results and that is all that Andy Reid is concerned about

Following these statements, Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid in his press conference defended his quarterback. Coach Reid had this to say about Mahomes, “A lot of coaches have to teach guys how to roll out and call plays and he just does it, he’s tremendous. You guys look at Pro Football Focus and all(media outlets) those things so just take a peek at that and see how many times he hits the second receiver.”

Reid’s statements are accurate, in a league where players are unable to master play calling even after years in the league, Mahomes has mastered the art. From his first season, he has been breaking records and the hopes of those who predicted that he will fail. Though his style may be different, it is not terrible.

His passes are accurate, he can throw the ball deep and to perfection. If all of these requisites are involved, then what more would you want from your quarterback? He gets the job done, even in the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the game where he arguably faced the tightest defense ever, he managed to throw the ball even if it meant him having to perform acrobatics mid-air.

Mahomes belongs in the top 3 quarterbacks of the NFL and calling him a tier 2 quarterback is nothing short of disrespectful and outright wrong.
