“I also waited behind Brett Favre for three years”: Aaron Rodgers reflects on comparison between himself & Jordan Love

Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers has been the Green Bay Packers’ starting Quarterback for more than a decade after being a back up to Brett Favre for the first 3 years of his NFL career and hasn’t looked back ever since. Favre and Rodgers didn’t have the best of starts as Favre wasn’t very welcoming to the young Rodgers.

Rodgers who was drafted with the 24th pick in the 2005 NFL draft is one of the best to ever play Quarterback and has filled Favre’s shoes quite well at Green Bay so he must have been quite surprised when history repeated itself when the Packers drafted Jordan Love with the 26th pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Since then Rodgers who was believed to be on the downturn has done nothing but win 2 consecutive NFL MVPs with historic performances which has put Packers top brass and Love in a tough spot. Recently Rodgers shared his thoughts on criticism that has gone Love’s way.

Mike Clemens a Packers beat writer asked Rodgers in an interview about Jordan Love’s preseason game as a starter-“Friday night Jordan Love will be in the spotlight. Has he gone through as much ridicule or criticism or doubt that you did from 2005 to 2008?”

Rodgers replied-“Oh I don’t know about that. I think there’s always pressure on a first-round pick. The tracks are looking more similar by the day, [Love] being in his third year and me waiting behind Brett for three years. Something clicks in at some point and the game slows down and you make the plays you know you are capable of making and I look forward to watching him on Friday. And against the Saints, as well.

Rodgers added that-“But the most important thing for a quarterback is the confidence and the confidence comes from the consistency and the fundamentals and making plays in practice and feeling good about the offense and all the things that are expected of you. Whether the criticism was equal in ’05, ’06 and ’07 for me as it was for him, I don’t know. Some of that you kinda move past as you’ve had success. But I’m excited for him this preseason.

Rodgers signed a 3 year extension with the Packers earlier this offseason which has made him the highest paid player in the league on a per year basis and with 2 consecutive MVP trophies in his bag, it doesn’t look like Love will have a chance to be Packers QB1 any time soon unless something unexpected happens and when Rodgers is involved anything is possible.
