Brett Favre was accused of funnelling millions of dollars to his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, by building a volleyball court where his daughter allegedly played.

The $77 million welfare fund scandal led to the arrest of 6 high profile people, out of which 5 have confessed to their wrongdoings. Although Brett Favre is not been criminally charged yet, the Packers QB is still under investigation.

“No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me.” Brett Favre stated in the statement. “I tried to help my alma mater USM, a public Mississippi state university, raise funds for a wellness center. My goal was and always will be to improve the athletic facilities at my university.”

Brett Favre’s lawyer has stated that the former QB had no idea that the money was taken from the welfare fund that was intended for the people who deserved it and also stated that if Favre had known he wouldn’t have accepted the money.

“He had no idea that the payment came from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and had he known, he never would have accepted that money.” Eric Herschmann, Brett Favre’s lawyer stated.

Although the leaked texts portray a different story as they suggest that Favre knew about the source of the money and still went ahead with the process to build the volleyball facility at USM. Brett Favre is also accused of taking around $1 million from the fund to give a speech that he didn’t give.

Brett Favre had a major concern that the media would find out about the scandal, which they ultimately did. The FBI has also investigated the former Hall of Famer but hasn’t filed any charges yet.
