On Saturday, Caleb Williams and the No.20 USC Trojans squared off against the Michael Penix Jr.-led Washington Huskies in one of the biggest college football matchups this year. Multiple NFL scouts and general managers were in attendance to watch the duel between two Heisman Trophy candidates and they didn’t fail to deliver. However, USC QB Williams made a huge blunder in the second quarter while trying to avoid a sack.

During the final minutes of the second quarter, the scores were tied at 28 a piece and the Trojans were trying to march down the field and put some points on the board. Caleb Williams, who received the ball from the shotgun position, was immediately met with pressure as his pocket collapsed on him.

Williams then tried to evade the sack by scrambling but the Huskies defensive end Zion Tupuola-Fetui was relentless in his pursuit and forced a strip sack on the Trojans QB resulting in a turnover. Check out the footage attached below.

That was the 30th fumble committed by the Trojans quarterback in his CFB career so far, the most in FBS since 2021. Nonetheless, the Huskies took advantage of the turnover and registered a touchdown to take a 7-point lead just before the end of the 1st half. The Huskies had a great second quarter as they completely outplayed the Trojans and scored 28 points in one quarter.

Apart from that one fumble, Caleb Williams had a flawless game as he completed 77.1% of his pass attempts for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns while rushing for one more TD. On the other side, Michael Penix Jr. had a shaky game for Washington as he threw an interception and wasn’t able to use his legs a lot. But he had great help in the rushing game.

The Washington Huskies running back Dillon Johnson had a career day as he carried the rock 26 times for 256 yards and 4 rushing TDs while averaging a whopping 9.8 yards per attempt on the night.

In the end, the No.5 ranked Huskies’ ground and pound gameplan worked out well against the Trojans as they ended up securing a 52-42 victory in the AP Top 25 showdown. With that victory, Washington remains undefeated in the season and is still in the hunt for a spot in the CFB playoffs.
