‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Brock Purdy is just one victory away from becoming an unlikely Super Bowl champion. He and the San Francisco 49ers are currently preparing for their Super Bowl game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Amidst this, the former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton delivers a message to the Niners faithful to stop attacking him over the ‘game manager’ comments.
During a recent interview with the San Francisco-based sports reporter Jason Dumas, Newton admitted that he loves Brock Purdy and wanted the Niners fans to stop tagging him in their posts.
Please stop '@ ing' me... I really like Brock, I love him. I've never seen the attack to be this vicious. I love it though. But it just shows the support.Cam Newton told Jason Dumas
A few months ago, Cam Newton referred to some players including, Brock Purdy as game managers, which led to him receiving a massive backlash on social media. Several people, including some former NFL players, attacked Newton for belittling Purdy’s achievements in the league, by referring him to as simply a game manager.
But the former NFL MVP continued to target Purdy and kept refusing to put the 49ers QB in the same category as some other star players. Newton also said that Purdy is the 10th-best player on his team. Moreover, just a couple of days ago, Newton went on The Dan Patrick Show, where he said that Purdy is not in the top sphere of talent.
As a result, fans also started attacking Newton and now he seems to be slightly backpedalling from his stance. But, the damage might be already done.
Brock Purdy sees Cam Newton’s game manager tag as a compliment
Amidst all the chaos surrounding Cam Newton’s game manager comments, the San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy brushed off the negative comments. During Tuesday’s press conference, Purdy claimed that the label could be a compliment.
I feel like it can be a compliment at times where it's like alright, you've got a guy that can come in and run the system well. I feel like that's a compliment. There's 32 teams in the NFL and there's not a lot of people that can come in and play the quarterback position well in the NFL. It's a hard job.Brock Purdy told the reporters on Tuesday
So, it’s clear, Purdy isn’t letting any negativity affect his focus ahead of the most important game of his life so far. Purdy can prove a lot of people wrong by defeating the Chiefs this Sunday in the Super Bowl, but it won’t be an easy task.
