“BAKER RUINED his career”: The Carolina Panthers have fired HC Matt Rhule after a disappointing 1-4 start to the season
Matt Rhule may have been on track to be fired but Baker Mayfield expedited the whole process.
Matt Rhule’s stint as the Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers has officially come to an end. The HC was fired after his team got off to an underwhelming start with a 1-4 run this season. This season was supposed to be a second chance for Rhule, who got a new quarterback in Baker Mayfield. However, instead of turning the franchise around, he ended up making the team worse than it was last season.
Matt Rhule signed a $62 million contract with the Carolina Panthers in 2020 for seven years. He managed to convince the owner, David Tepper, that he was the man for the job. But as soon as he arrived, rather than improving, Carolina got worse. This is a first for Rhule as well, who has gained a reputation for turning the fates of bad teams around and transforming them into winners.
Matt Rhule ends his time in Carolina Panthers with a dismal 11-27 record:
What is surprising is the timing of his firing. We are not even halfway into the season and the team has already lost faith in its Head Coach. From this point on, Steve Wilks will be taking over as the interim Head Coach for the team. Under Rhule, the Panthers have been at the bottom of the league in top metrics, such as points per game; the team ranks 29th out of 32 teams. In terms of touchdowns scored and passer rating, the Panthers were ranked 30th for both metrics.
The only ray of hope for Carolina this season is their defense, but there is only so much a good defense can do. The offense has to show up and this season despite having a new quarterback in Baker Mayfield, their offense continues to well, for the lack of a better word, suck.
Matt Rhule’s tenure saw the Panthers switch quarterbacks regularly. The team did not have a franchise player at the position and even under Baker Mayfield; they do not have a player who is worthy of being a long-term franchise player.
The bigger question in light of Matt Rhule’s firing is, was he really the man who deserved to lose his job, or was he just the fall guy for Baker Mayfield? Baker has had his most disappointing season in the NFL with the Panthers, he has looked awful throwing for 962 yards in 5 games, passing for just 4 touchdowns, and recording four interceptions. He could not have a worse QBR as he is 32nd in comparison to other quarterbacks, with a disappointing 16.5. Even during his stint at Cleveland, he was able to get Hue Jackson fired and got the coach of his liking, Freddie Kitchens. Granted, Jackson was not a great coach, but he did end up taking the fall for Baker Mayfield’s performance in his rookie year.
Here’s how Twitter users reacted to the firing of Matt Rhule:
The 1-4 record speaks for itself. Rhule was struggling to change the culture in Carolina.
If Matt Nagy is who Baker wants, then it is a possibility. However, we have to root for Steve Wilks, he joins Todd Bowles, Lovie Smith, and Mike Tomlin as the only 3 active HCs of color in the league.
It’s not Ron Rivera. Blame it on Wentz and his performance.
It was rather unexpected at this time of the year.
The only reason for Carolina fans to celebrate this season.
Now, that is a bit of a stretch. Remember this guy called Urban Meyer? He coached the Jaguars for a season and went around kicking his players? He deserves that title.
Guessing you do not stand with Baker Mayfield.
You could get God to come and coach the Panthers, but at the end of the day, he is not the one throwing the ball. We all know whose job that is.
This could be the cleverest tweet I’ve come across, good one.
The Panthers will now rely on Steve Wilks. Hopefully, he is able to do some damage control and get Carolina to win a handful of games. Only time will tell how the team will end up playing.
