The Dallas Cowboys were amongst the favorites to make it into the Super Bowl this season. However, they failed to make a claim for the biggest prize in the sport suffering a heartbreaking defeat against the San Francisco 49ers.
The defeat by a margin of 19-12 left a lot to be desired of from the offensive team, with Dak Prescott failing to provide the impetus required in a such a high magnitude game. The devastating loss had an immediate casualty, with the Cowboys deciding to let go of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
With a massive hole to fill in the strategic department, owner Jerry Jones has decided to give the role of the play calling to his head coach Mike McCarthy. He will become the first Cowboys head coach since Jason Garrett in 2012 to call plays for the franchise next season.
Mike McCarthy is still hoping to emulate his success with the Packers at the Cowboys
“This is the logical step to build on it and use what we’ve established, if you will, the foundation of the things we’ve got,” Jones said to reporters at the Senior Bowl.
“This is the time for us to build on it. That’s what this is, a building step. It will be, in principle, the way he operated in Green Bay, which I’m sure he’ll tell you evolved,” Jones said.
McCarthy’s own position as the head coach of the franchise was under scrutiny towards the end of the regular season. However, he will be relieved with the vote of confidence shown in him by the owner.
This will be a big change in terms of the franchise’s offensive plays going forward, as Jones hoped to bring about a change in the system. During McCarthy’s appointment as head coach in 2020, the only backroom staff which remained from the previous regime was the offensive coordinator in a bid to not shake up Dak Prescott’s gameplay.
After yet another unsuccessful playoffs season, it seems that Jerry Jones is ready to make the big step up desperately required to take them to the next level. Only time will tell whether McCarthy would improve the offensive plays next season, but as of now it seems a postive move.
