Bill Belichick‘s 24th season as head coach of the New England Patriots will go down as his worst ever. With just 2 wins in 12 games, the 2023 NFL season is close to being the worst in his career as head coach of any franchise.

One has to roll back time to the veteran head coach’s time with the Cleveland Browns (5-11), the last time he ended up with a negative record as bad as this year. It appears as if the rest of the league has figured out Belichick’s methods and knows how to counter them.

It was on full display on Sunday night at SoFI Stadium when the Patriots faced the Los Angeles Chargers. Let’s get one thing out of the way: those who attended the game in LA must have ended up pulling their hair, not because it was a close game, but because it never got going. It was a punt fest from start to finish.

The scoreline did not even reach double digits as it ended 6-0 in favor of the Chargers. As a result, the Patriots are now the first team in the Super Bowl era to go 0-3 during a three-game stretch while surrendering no more than 10 points in each game. The other two results were Giants 10-7 and Colts 10-6.

After the game, Belichick showed up for the routine press conference. He has always been someone who is not so forthcoming following a loss. And it appeared to be the case, judging by the tone of his voice.

Being bombarded with questions relating to the offense for more or less 6 minutes, the 71-year-old decided that he had heard enough.

Anything else?

Belichick asked and then abruptly left the room.

Bill Belichick is losing his grip on the New England Patriots

Despite his recent poor form, Belichick will go down as one of the best head coaches ever. He has more than 300 wins under his belt and 141 of those came during the last decade (126 wins from 2000–2009).

However, since the start of the current decade, he has lost more games than won (26-29). Furthermore, the Chargers’ loss is pushing him toward another unwanted piece of NFL history. According to NFL Research’s Tony Holzman-Escareno,

Bill Belichick is on pace to have the lowest win percentage (.167) in a season by any head coach with a team he had previously won the Super Bowl with.

Legendary head coach Tom Landry set this woeful record while coaching the Dallas Cowboys. He was fired at the end of the season (1988) after taking over in 1960. Coach Belichick appears to be heading in the same direction as well.
