The NBA and its players came to a new agreement on Saturday that the league would stop testing the athletes for marijuana use. It is a massive decision in the sports world and the former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee wants the NFL to follow NBA’s footsteps and stop testing football players for marijuana use entirely.
Players have been asking to remove marijuana from the drug testing system for a long time. Kevin Durant, who is currently playing for the Phoenix Suns revealed that he has been smoking marijuana since he was 22. “For me, it clears the distraction from your brain, it’s like having a glass of wine,” Durant said in an interview with David Letterman last year.
In fact, former NBA player J.R. Smith revealed that during the Covid-19 bubble basketball season, most players were smoking weed. “We was blowing it down in there,” JR Smith noted. “It was cool, I’m glad it happened because it finally broke that barrier and that stigma that you couldn’t play and all of this. It was a drug, it was this and that. When you can be at peace with your mind, your body, and your soul, and you can go out there and just hoop, that’s all you want.”
And now, the league has finally listened to the players and has removed marijuana from the drug testing system. NBA has become the first major sporting league in the United States to stop testing players for marijuana use.
Pat McAfee wants the NFL to stop testing for weed use
Following NBA’s historic decision on Saturday, the former Colts player and American media personality Pat McAfee jumped on social media and demanded the NFL do the same by removing weed from the testing system.
“Hey, @NFL… you see the @NBA just decided to stop testing for marijuana entirely?” tweet McAfee on Saturday. His request to the league got mixed reactions from the fans on social media since some people believe marijuana is a drug and the players shouldn’t be allowed to play while they’re high.
Nevertheless, it took years and years of players speaking up on marijuana use in the NBA for the league to remove it from the testing system. But since one major league has already done it, the NFL might consider doing the same in the future.
Pat McAfee played as a punter for the Indianapolis Colts for 8 seasons. During his stint with the Colts, he received 2 Pro Bowl nods and was named to the first-team All-Pro squad one time. He is currently having a successful career as a media personality and hosts his own show.
