Success in the National Football League does not come easily, as has been proven by numerous players who have tried hard to make a name for themselves in one of the toughest sporting leagues across the world. Former Green Bay Packers quarterback, Brett Favre is considered one of the best players to have ever graced the gridiron and even he had to endure tough spells during his glittering career.
Favre, who won his only Super Bowl with the Packers in 1996, once explained in an interview how he had hit rock bottom in his career, courtesy of his addiction to painkillers. The 53-year-old referred to a particular game against the Philadelphia Eagles from 1994 which kickstarted his association with painkillers, as he suffered a major shoulder injury.
This was followed by a certain ankle injury, which did not require him to take painkillers, but he did take loads of it anyway just for the fun of it. That was possibly the start of the addiction for the legendary quarterback, and it led to worse things for him in the long run.
Brett Favre hasn’t touched any alcohol or drugs ever since rehabilitation

“I had eight pills in my possession. Eight pills would not do what I needed it to do. It would give me zero buzz,” Favre said during an episode of Bolling With Favre, his podcast. “I was home in Mississippi and I was as low as I possibly could be, even though I had won the Super Bowl and won three MVPs in a row. I was low and said, it’s one of two things: I die, or I flush these pills down the toilet.”
Favre revealed that the addiction almost made him kill himself, despite him having his best years of personal performances during those years, which also earned him three consecutive NFL MVP awards. He shared horrific details of him sweating every night at 9 o’clock, the time he used to take his painkillers daily, and it grew bigger with time.
“I sat by the toilet for two hours, and eventually, I dumped the pills in the toilet, flushed them, and I almost wanted to kill myself because of doing that.”
Favre claimed that he had taken 16 pills at once, during his peak addiction days, a number which grew over years having started back at 2 pills a day. A Green Bay doctor eventually found out about his addiction after the quarterback suffered a seizure.
“It snuck up on me. It was two pills that gave me a buzz, and then it was four,” Favre said. “At its peak, I was taking 16 Vicodin ES all at one time.”
The seizures became a recurring event, and it required him to undergo an extensive rehabilitation of 75 days, to get rid of the dangerous painkiller addiction.
