“Still not banged up,” Joe Montana shares his HONEST opinion about Tom Brady still playing at the ‘highest’ level in his 40s
Tom Brady and Joe Montana
One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Joe Montana, has recently spoken about Tom Brady’s longevity. Montana was regarded as the greatest quarterback ever before Brady came into the picture and swiftly stole the title from him. While it is obviously relative, Montana will always go down as one of the greatest.
Montana, who played until 38, recently said in an interview how everyone is getting used to Brady excelling in his 40s. He also mentioned that with age, he needs good support around him so that he could avoid injuries. He talked about the physicality involved in playing football and how important it is to have support to avoid injuries at this age.
“I think everybody is kind of getting used to it now,” he said about Brady doing well in his mid-40s. “But when he first started continuing to play, obviously, a lot of things play into that. He’s a great player. He’s got a great team on both sides of the ball, and that helps you. Not getting hit also makes it a little bit easier to get through those games physically. So, when you get to the next week, you’re still not banged up, and you don’t have anywhere near as many injuries.”
Joe Montana speaks on Tom Brady and his longevity
Brady retired from football earlier this year but changed his mind a couple of months later and came back to play for the Bucs at 44. Currently 45, he is still one of the best QB in the league and Montana isn’t surprised that he’s excelling. He recalled that he was surprised when Drew Brees called it off in 2020 at 43 for the Saints, despite doing so well.
“They’ve taken away a lot of things where a quarterback normally gets hurt, like low hits and the compression into the ground by the defensive lineman. So, I’m not surprised he’s (excelling). I was surprised actually that Drew Brees got out of the game like that at that age. He was playing pretty well when he got out,” Montana said.
Brady has had his moments this season but has underperformed massively according to his high standards. He has led the Bucs to 5-6 for the season and they are currently the division leaders of the NFC South.
