The Denver Broncos’ safety Kareem Jackson has had a difficult season. He has been suspended twice this season for repeated violations of playing rules intended to protect the health and safety of players. He is currently suspended for the same and is scheduled to return to the Broncos’ squad before their game against the New England Patriots on December 24.
On November 29, Jackson went to New York to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to seek some clarity for his suspensions and fines. The suspension will end up costing him six games and, more importantly, six game checks. The meeting lasted just over an hour, but Jackson believes that the instruction he got from the commissioner could be ineffective going forward.
Jackson said, via Denver Sports:
I feel a lot better leaving being able to express myself, but I was told that I’m responsible for the offensive guys’ protection," So, I’m not really sure how I protect myself, make plays and protect him (the offensive player) as well. But that’s what I was told, and I’m not really sure what I do moving forward as far as playing this game, so, hopefully I’ll figure it out.Kareem Jackson via DenverSports.com
The 35-year-old safety was drafted in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He spent his first nine seasons with the Texans and later signed with the Denver Broncos in 2019. He has been with the Broncos since then.
Kareem Jackson has been fined $1 million this season
Kareem Jackson, the Denver Broncos’ veteran safety, has been suspended twice this season for illegal hits. He has also endured fines of nearly $1 million this season and has been ejected multiple times already this campaign.
When he hit Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs in Week 11, he drew his second suspension for the first tackle he made after serving his first one. The Broncos (7-6) have won four of the five games Jackson has missed, mainly due to the ferocious, steady play of his replacement, PJ Locke. Locke is the first safety in team history to record sacks in three straight games.
The Broncos have won six of their last seven games so far. Their latest win came on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. After a difficult start to the season, they have picked up their game and are in the mix to earn a postseason berth this season.
