There have been some trades in sports history wherein teams have given up a lot in order to acquire a prominent player who has the potential to turn the fates of a franchise around. However, in many instances, such trades have not yielded the desired results. In recent history, if you look at the NBA, the Brooklyn Nets’ decision to combine James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant was one that should have been successful and one that ought to have guaranteed them success but that failed miserably as the trio just did not connect.

In the NFL, the biggest trade in recent history has the potential to be dubbed the worst one that fans have witnessed in a long time. The 2022 trade of QB Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos was one that made the team an immediate Super Bowl contender, at least on paper. The hype was real. All fans heard and saw from Wilson prior to the commencement of the regular season was “Let’s Ride Broncos Country, Let’s Ride.”

Alas, as the NFL season started and went on, Broncos country decided to hop off that ride as Russell Wilson, who was supposed to be the missing piece in the puzzle for this team to succeed, ended up becoming the reason for their decline. Ultimately, Denver never made it to the playoffs, which was nothing short of a disappointment.

Wilson is making $49 million per year and will make a total of $296 million over seven years. Considering he got this contract and had the worse season of his NFL career, this is nothing short of a highway robbery. It so happens that former Seattle Seahawks linebacker KJ Wright concurs. He dubbed this trade “Could go down as the biggest trade heist in NFL history.”

Wright appeared on the Good Morning Football Show, and spoke about his former quarterback. The linebacker is of the opinion that Russell Wilson’s legacy hangs in the balance following his disappointing season. In addition to this, he had a lot of praise for Head Coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider and called them “geniuses” for having drawn up this trade.

In order to get Russ, Denver gave up a 5th overall pick in this year’s draft, a 9th overall pick in the 2022 draft, a 2nd round pick in the 2022 and 2023 drafts, and a 5th rounder in the 2022 draft. In addition to this, TE Noah Fant and QB Drew Lock along with DL Shelby Harris were part of the package sent to the Seahawks. All of this for Russell Wilson.

KJ Wright believes that “If Russell doesn’t figure it out this year, his legacy is definitely on the line.” The Broncos had issues throughout the season ranging from issues with their HC to the QB. The defense played well, however, the offense came up short which resulted in the team having a short-lived season. Russ needs to step his game up this season as it is his last shot at proving that he still is the QB that can take a team back to the Super Bowl.
