“They think this is Tyron Smith’s replacement, but…”: Matt Mosely doesn’t believe in Tyler Smith

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the few teams that follow a simple philosophy of drafting players and developing them over time rather than trading for certified superstars. However, this strategy has partially worked for America’s team. Last year they performed amazingly at the NFL Draft by picking Micah Parsons and the team fared well in 2020 by picking DB Trevon Diggs. Both the players have proven their worth in a short period of time, Diggs had the most interceptions last season while Parsons won the defensive rookie of the year award.

However, not every move the Cowboys make strikes gold. In this year’s draft, the majority of the analysts believe that the team chose the wrong player.

“He is not Tyron Smith’s replacement”: Matt Mosley on Tyler Smith

In any regular NFL team, the decisions on which player to draft is made by the scouting team in collaboration with the coaches and other integral staff members. The GM also has a significant amount of input, however, his main role is only to figure out how to land the talented players recommended by the scouts and coaches onto the team.

With the Dallas Cowboys, the scenario is a bit different, despite having a scouting team, the final say is in the hands of GM and owner Jerry Jones. He is one of the most vocal owner-operators in the entire NFL and has publicly claimed full credit for discovering Micah Parsons potential and as a result drafting him.

This year as well, Jones claimed full credit for picking Tackle Tyler Smith. Matt Mosley appeared on the Colin Cowherd podcast and spoke about the Cowboys’ latest draft pick.

He is one of the few people who believe the Cowboys did not necessarily mess up in the draft. “Interestingly, with this player, all these amateur scouts had him with a third-round grade,” he went on to add, “The Cowboys have decided, and I halfway applaud them for this, they think this is Tyron Smith’s replacement and he can be a great tackle, even though he is not a great replacement at left guard right now which is what they need, they need someone to replace Connor Williams.”

Mosley also brought up the issue of Tyler Smith’s tendency to pick up penalties left and right, “They’re getting a guy that is heavily penalized like Connor Williams, so they’re (Cowboys) are basically saying we’ll bite the bullet for a year or two because we think this guy can be a great left tackle.

Tyler Smith had a total of 16 penalties last year, so it is a legitimate concern for the Cowboys. The team without Smith has also raked up a lot of penalties during the last season. It is to be seen if Tyler Smith is really what Jerry Jones claims he is and if he can replace Tyron Smith.
