The massive question surrounding Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers‘ future has now been answered by the man himself. Rodgers finally broke his silence on the subject last night, when he appeared on the Pat McAfee Show to announce his imminent move to the New York Jets.
The 39-year-old who signed a three year contract extension worth $150 million with the Packers will now leave the franchise after playing out only a year of that contract. Rodgers had kept everyone hanging ever since the final regular season game of the 2022/23 NFL season, as he gave cryptic responses when asked about his future.
After a poor season with the Packers in which they failed to qualify for the playoffs, the fact that Rodgers will leave the franchise became a huge possibility, but the fact that he kept everyone waiting did not please everyone. Former NFL wide receiver, Shannon Sharpe in particular was extremely critical of the quarterback. He claimed that the Packers were tired of his attitude over the past five years.
Shannon Sharpe feels Aaron Rodgers took the Packers for granted in the last five years
Shannon Sharpe said, “Typical Aaron Rodgers. Somehow, the Packers wronged him. No, they’re just tired of your bs. They’re tired of your bulljive. And you retiring, unretiring. And they tired of you trying to have control of their organization”.
“I believe if Aaron Rodgers would have behaved in a manner of professionalism, I believe Aaron Rodgers could’ve, you know, could have had a Coach K career. ‘I’m gonna retire’, boom. No problem. But the way he’s behaved over the last five years. Let’s move on. It’s time to move on”.
In all fairness, the Packers waited a long time for Aaron Rodgers to make up his mind, whether he wanted to continue with the franchise or retire. Rodgers also went into a four day long darkness retreat, in a bid to clear his mind and make a decision faster but that fasten up the process as expected.
In the end, it comes as no surprise that the Packers moved on from Rodgers as their starting quarterback for the 2023/24 season with an eye on the future as well, with Jordan Love all set to take up the role. Rodgers’ decision will also help the franchise make an informed drafting decision before the 2023 NFL draft in a few months’ time.
