Aaron Donald is a force to be reckoned. The LA Rams defensive superstar is one of the best, if not the best, in the league. He has won 3 defensive player of the year awards and is frontrunner for the award each year. The man is a perennial all pro and has no equal. #99 is a problem for any team and a match-up nightmare. Any one facing the Rams should want their best offensive linesman on the job against Donald. For any offensive linesman, Aaron Donald is their worst nightmare doubled.

With that being said, when Donald’s LA Rams faced the Dallas Cowboys, the team from Dallas had an interesting plan regarding Donald as facing Donald and unsuccessfully trying to keep him in check was Cowboys rookie Tyler Smith. A head scratching decision definitely.

Many were asking the same question: what are the Cowboys thinking as Donald got 2.5 sacks on Cooper Rush and had plenty of opportunity to do some damage. Shannon Sharpe, the Hall of Fame tight end who sits opposite one of the biggest Cowboys fan Skip Bayless, was one of the loudest. He not only took out his frustrations with the Cowboys, but took a shot at his co-host, too.

Sharpe took to Twitter to vent and raged against the Cowboys’ decision making. He rightly pointed out that Aaron Donald is the best defender in the game and putting a rookie lineman against him makes no sense.

Whatever might have been the thought process behind the move didn’t pay dividends, and the Cowboys needed to adjust their game as Donald wrecked havoc. It was a clear mismatch both physically and mentally, as Donald’s experience as the best defender in the league has given him a lot of experience that he can rely on.

The Cowboys, to their credit, adjusted their game continually to make it hard for Donald to get comfortable after he overwhelmed Smith.

In the end Donald was the bright spot for the Rams in a 22-10 defeat that leaves the defending Super Bowl champs with a 2-3 record, not what anyone was expecting from a team with back-to-back Superbowl wins aspirations.
