Kenny Pickett, the quarterback who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers, had no clue that his team was going to fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada after their abysmal loss against the Cleveland Browns. The QB was sleeping when his phone was buzzing continuously.
The first news he got after waking up was Canada being sacked for not providing the result he was hired for. The team’s repeated offensive failures had been a concern among the fans and they had been running the ‘Out Matt Canada’ campaign for a long. Finally, their voices were heard.
However, the quarterback took the news personally and coined a wake-up call for all of the Steelers members.
It's a challenge to everybody--I feel like you have to take it personal. It's a guy you've worked with since I got drafted here, you want to play great, you don't want to see anyone get let go like that. So absolutely we have to answer the bell, find out what we need to do to play better, and then just go take care of business.Pickett on Wednesday (H/T: ESPN)
From his shocking admission, it can be understood that the team and its members had no idea that Canada was going to be sacked. Despite multiple backlashes from the fans, Canada’s job was looking secure. However, the unexpected (or expected) happened and no one had any clue.
I wasn't aware of any moves that were going to be made. You hate to see it. You don't want to see one of your coaches lose their job. We all got to be better. Called coach [Canada], and wished him well. We had a great conversation, but you got to bounce back quick and get ready to go.
His voice was echoed by the team’s center Mason Cole. Like Pickett, he also was clueless that Canada would be fired. He held himself and others responsible for the bad fortune of Canada.
Not everything was nice with Matt Canada on the Steelers team
Despite the statements by Pickett and Cole, it can’t be said that everyone was with Canada or everyone was on his side. After the news of Matt Canada losing his job was announced, a video resurfaced on social media that clearly questioned the balance in the team.
It was a video from the year 2022. After a week Six win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Matt Canada was spotted celebrating with other Steelers players. Chris Boswell, the team’s Placekicker arrived in the situation and said,
It ain’t ’cause of you, I can guarantee that.
It was a direct criticism of Canada’s tactics. The video created much buzz among the fans.
It became clear that Canada was not only unpopular among fans but also did not share a good reputation with the players. After his departure, it is to be seen whether the Steelers improve things.
