“to limit his earnings”: Pat McAfee discusses a bizarre conspiracy theory surrounding Tom Brady’s unretirement

If this conspiracy theory is true, Tom Brady is not just an elite athlete but also an excellent entrepreneur.

Tom Brady is recently divorced. The legendary quarterback concluded an ugly dispute with his former wife, Gisele Bündchen after months of tension between them. Their split was an ugly one, as it was largely public, and we saw a lot of rumors and reasons stem out into the public domain. Despite their relationship coming to an end, the conspiracy theories behind the reason for their split are still as hot a topic as ever.

Tom Brady’s decision to unretire and come back to the NFL was, in all likelihood, the determining factor that drove Gisele over the edge. She had been public about opposing the quarterback’s return to the league, as she was afraid of the physicality that the game carries. The latest conspiracy theory regarding their divorce says otherwise.

A user on Twitter came up with an interesting analogy. What if Tom Brady knew that his relationship with Gisele Bündchen had reached a breaking point where divorce was inevitable? Keeping this in mind, the quarterback decided that from this point forward; he has to protect and preserve his own financial assets.

Tom Brady signed a massive 10-year deal with Fox Sports worth $375 million. This deal was a flexible one, as it would be enforceable only when the quarterback decided to retire from the league. If TB12 continued with his retirement, he risked having to split the $375 million with Gisele, and in order to get around that, the conspiracy theory believes the quarterback decided to come back and play for the Buccaneers.

The conspiracy theory relating to Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen is an interesting one but may not have much merit to it:

Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady have amicably split up their assets as per their prenuptial agreement.

Tom Brady makes an estimated $4 million per year playing for Tampa. So by this logic, his contract with Fox Sports has not yet kicked into effect. If he could limit his earnings and show that to the attorneys, the amount he would have to pay would be much lesser. Though an interesting analogy, it may not necessarily be true.

Pat McAfee reacted to this theory and had this to say, “Maybe Tom was checked out a little bit, maybe Tom had not entirely bought into this season. Somebody tweeted a theory, there is zero justification behind it. What if Tom knew this divorce was coming, so he delays the $375 million payday till after the divorce and comes back and plays? What are the chances Brady came back to the Bucs just to limit his earnings?”

The issue with this theory is, on paper, it is thought-provoking, but in practicality, Gisele and Tom had signed a watertight prenuptial agreement. So no matter what happened, if their marriage did come down to a divorce, both would walk away with their assets intact. The only point of a dispute would be the joint properties that they may deal with in an amicable manner.

It does not come as a surprise that Gisele and Tom decided to sign a prenup. When one is in their position, emotions do matter, but one has to think about the situation in a rational manner and protect their assets. However, the details of their prenup are not public. We cannot dismiss the fact that maybe there could have been a clause that could have compelled Tom to pay Gisele a significant sum if he signed a massive contract. Those details may never see the light of day and end up being just topics that we can speculate upon.
