The free agency market for quarterbacks just got a whole lot shorter. The Seahawks signed a three-year $105 million contract extension with Geno Smith. Smith went off in 2022 and showed exceptional skills under center and led the team to the playoffs in his first year as a starter for Seattle.

The New Orleans Saints also scooped up veteran quarterback Derek Carr and signed him to a four-year $150 million deal. This move by the Saints automatically makes them the best team in the NFC South division and a playoff contender. Carr has proven to be a dependable quarterback, and with NO’s defense, the team can do wonders in 2023.

With teams already finalizing their quarterbacks for the upcoming season, the Baltimore Ravens are yet to close the deal with Lamar Jackson. The Ravens have been in contract negotiation since last year and still, there hasn’t been any development in whether the team plans on keeping him or trading him.

Lamar Jackson just completed his fifth year at Baltimore and requested the team for a contract extension. However, Jackson wanted an extension worth $200 million, fully guaranteed, similar to the one Deshaun Watson got from the Browns. Baltimore outright refused to pay such a huge amount to the unanimous 2019 NFL MVP, which was deemed a mistake by fans and analysts.

The Ravens offered him $133 fully guaranteed as reported by ESPN, but Lamar Jackson refused to settle at such a lowball offer. Ravens executive vice president Ozzie Newsome said on Monday that the team will continue to strike a deal with Jackson up until the franchise tag deadline which is on March 7. “Today and up until 3:30 tomorrow, a lot of energy will be utilized in trying to get a deal done. If not, we will put the franchise tag on him.”

This move by the Ravens’ front office irked a lot of fans as they saw this as disrespect toward one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. Many analysts have predicted that Jackson won’t play in the 2023 season if he is placed on the franchise tag. Here are a few reactions of fans on Twitter after the Ravens’ executive’s latest statement.

Lamar Jackson has proven himself to be a generational talent and worthy enough to lead a team to the Super Bowl. The Ravens are still refusing to shell out the big bucks to keep him on the roster for the next decade or so and be a perennial playoff contender. The team will most probably place the franchise tag on him, but it’s certain that the tag will play an important role in whether Jackson starts in 2023.
