The NFL 2023 offseason is well and truly off and running, with the New Orleans Saints making the biggest move yet. The Saints have secured themselves an incredible deal, which solves their quarterback problem for the upcoming seasons with the acquisition of former Raiders QB Derek Carr on a 4-year contract.

Arguably, the best quarterback among the available, Carr was on the top of the list for a number of franchises. New York Jets and Carolina Panthers had also shown plenty of interest in signing him and had met him during these three weeks of free agency.

However, the Saints pouched the 31-year-old former Fresno State player by offering him a $150 million contract, with $100 million in total guaranteed pay. Carr comes in with his experience of 9 seasons with the Raiders and is all set to take over the No.1 quarterback spot, ahead of the likes of Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston.

The fact that Saints head coach is Dennis Allen might have had a big impact on Carr giving his approval to the Saints. Derek Carr has previously played under Allen in 2014 when the quarterback first set foot into the NFL from the draft.

Allen was the head coach for the Oakland Raiders that year and picked him up as the 36th overall pick in the second round of the draft. Since then, Carr has become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and holds the record for the best career passing yards, touchdown passes, and passer rating for the Raiders.

The move to bring in Derek Carr has been received with a lot of praise for the Saints, especially given the fact that their last postseason appearance came in 2020. Twitter hailed Carr’s arrival, with some comparing him to the signing of legendary quarterback Drew Brees, who retired that particular year. Check out a few Twitter reactions –

The consensus is that Carr can lead them to a playoff spot next season, and the quarterback will also want to change his poor postseason appearance record.
