The cat is finally out of the bag, with the Arizona Cardinals deciding to let go of wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins after his three-year spell with the franchise. The 30-year-old joined the Cardinals in 2020 on a 2-year contract, after having spent seven years with the Houston Texans since 2013.
The uncertainty surrounding Hopkins’ future had started as early as the end of the 2022/23 season, when the Cardinals had a massive upheaval in their head coach and general manager, with Jonathan Gannon taking over the reins of the franchise. Along with the changes in personnel, the financial structure also didn’t suit Hopkins’ stay at the Cardinals with him having a $30.75 million cap hit, a figure which makes him the seventh highest in the league overall.
Hopkins’ contract was all set to run out till 2024, and the general thinking around the franchise was that he will stay with them this season even before the NFL draft this season. However, releasing Hopkins also had its benefits with the franchise now being able to save $8.15 million in cap space with his departure.
DeAndre Hopkins will become a hot property in the coming weeks as he chooses his next franchise
Hopkins was the leading receiver for the Arizona Cardinals in the 2022/23 season in terms of receiving yards with a total tally of 717 yards, despite missing the first six games of the season due to a suspension. Even before the release became official, Hopkins had already named the quarterbacks that he would like to play with next, wherein he dropped a big hint of his possible departure from the franchise.
He stated that he wanted a stable management, and named the likes of Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Justin Herbert as the quarterbacks he wanted to play with.
“What I want is stable management upstairs. I think that’s something that I haven’t really had the past couple years of my career coming from Houston to being in Arizona. I’ve been through three to four GMs in my career,” Hopkins said while appearing on the “I Am Athlete” podcast.
The wide receiver market has seen a drastic overshooting in terms of the financial contracts awarded to players in the past couple of seasons, and for a receiver of DeAndre Hopkins’ stature, the speculations have begun as to where he will play his trade this upcoming season. Fans have put on their thinking hats, to speculate which team might sign him, and which quarterback actually needs a proven wide receiver like him. Check out a few reactions-
According to ESPN, the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills are interested in signing him but nothing concrete has come out as of now.
