A familiar sight returned at the Owings Mills facility, where the Baltimore Ravens are currently undergoing their voluntary Organized Team Activities. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was spotted for the first time back with the franchise after signing his massive contract extension last month.
At one point during the offseason, Lamar Jackson returning to the Ravens seemed impossible, given the uncertainty that surrounded his contract renewal. All things pointed at a possible divorce between Jackson and the Ravens, as he was placed on a nonexclusive franchise tag, which gave him full freedom to negotiate a contract with other franchises.
After an intensive last couple of years, which went by with Jackson wanting a contract renewal from the franchise, he eventually received the best possible deal he could have asked for last month. The 26-year-old signed a whopping 5-year contract extension worth $260 million, with a guaranteed pay of $185 million, making him the highest-paid NFL player.
Lamar Jackson wants to learn the new offense ahead of the upcoming season
After the bumper contract, all eyes were on Lamar Jackson as to when he would join in with the team, and the quarterback answered those questions with his presence on the second day of the voluntary OTAs. This is in stark contrast to the approach Jackson took last season when he skipped the whole of the OTAs, which also coincided with the contract negotiations between him and the franchise.
Jackson was spotted doing light training on the first day of action, and head coach John Harbaugh, claimed that his workload will be monitored to get him fit and ready cometh the start of the season. The quarterback will also need to work closely with the offensive coordinator in order to get acquainted with the new system.
Speaking with reporters after the session, Jackson felt that he needs to learn to work with the new offensive players who have joined the team this offseason.
“New offense,” Jackson said. “Had to get that down pat before the season rolls in because the season’s getting there. We’ve got a couple months left, but still just wanted to learn the new offense and be with my guys.”
Lamar Jackson is, however, yet to meet up with his best wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr, who has not joined the voluntary OTAs so far and has decided to train separately in Arizona.
