The San Francisco 49ers found a diamond in the rough as they drafted the Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy as the dead last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Purdy who started the season as a third-string QB in the depth charts took over the starting QB job in San Fran after both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down with injuries.
The rookie sensation took over the starting QB role in week 13 of the 2022 regular season and never looked back. Purdy amazed a lot of people and led the Niners to the playoffs. The 49ers won all five games Purdy started and reached the NFC Championship game. However, during the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles, Purdy suffered an elbow injury which led to the 49ers losing the game to the Eagles in a humiliating fashion.
Purdy tried to play with the injury in the all-important game but it went in vain. Nonetheless, Purdy got elbow surgery in the off-season and is now recovering from it. Many reports suggested that the 2022 Rookie of the Year finalist Purdy will miss the entire 2023 NFL season but other reports suggested Purdy might be fit to play in the second half of the upcoming season.
But now, new reports suggest Brock Purdy has made a substantial improvement in his recovery. So, is there a possibility for Purdy to start for the 49ers in week 1 of the 2023 regular season?

Can Brock Purdy start week 1 of the 2023 regular season?
In part of his recovery, the 49ers’ former 7th-round pick Brock Purdy has started throwing footballs on his injured arm. The 49ers general manager John Lynch claims the Niners are encouraged by Purdy’s throwing session earlier this week.
“He’s had one (throwing) session thus far and we’re incredibly encouraged by that,” Lynch said during his appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He’s hitting all his marks, and that doesn’t surprise us, because he’s putting in all the work.”
“As for the best-case scenario, we’ll take it as it comes. The hope is he’s ready for training camp. The hope is he’s ready for the regular season,” Lynch added.
Just three months after surgery, Purdy started throwing the football. The Niners GM is hopeful Purdy will be fit in time for the regular season. The bottom line is Purdy still has a long way to go in his recovery, but he’s shown impressive progress.
But the 49ers’ front office will not rush Purdy’s recovery since they also have former first-round draft pick Trey Lance on the roster. Lance has shown promising improvement in his throwing motion after practicing with the 2022 Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes in the off-season.
In brief, while it’s highly unlikely for Brock Purdy to be fit ahead of the 2023 regular season, the former “Mr. Irrelevant” starting for the 49ers in week 1 of the upcoming season is not completely out of the picture.
