Fans can’t digest the fact that a veteran QB like Jimmy Garoppolo will play a backup to rookie Trey Lance. Though the team is committed to exploring the youngster’s talent by making him the #1 QB for the 49ers, fans will take some time getting used to it.
Kyle Shanahan was committed to starting Trey Lance over Garoppolo when asked about the QB situation in the 49ers squad. “Guys, this is Trey’s first year starting for us.” Kyle Shanahan said to the KNBR. “We were letting go a $24 million starting quarterback to do that. We got him back for a backup price. I don’t think that has to do with not having faith in your starter.”
Shanahan looks frustrated with recurring questions regarding the QB situation. Though Shanahan was aware of the outburst and the controversy that the media would create amidst this situation, he didn’t contemplate the after-effects of it.
“We all know how it would go,” Shanahan said when speaking about Lance replacing Garoppolo. “We understand that. The fact that he has a successful quarterback behind him, it’s obvious how that narrative will be and understandably so.”
Kyle Shanahan also has the support of the team to rally around Trey Lance and help him during tough times as they did with Garoppolo.
“I understand what people outside of our locker room will say and they are right in terms of human nature to do that. But it’s going to happen regardless if you don’t play well.” Kyle Shanahan hits back at the fans amidst the QB controversy.

Trey Lance was not voted as the captain in his first year as the starting QB and rightly so. There are many players ahead of him who are playing at the top level for so many years. It’s unlikely that they would choose Lance as their captain above so many players.
“Those guys have all played football at a very, very high level … I voted for every single one of those guys, so I think each and every one of them deserves it.” Trey Lance stated when talking about the captain situation.
Kyle Juszczyk who has been a captain before was voted ahead of Deebo Samuel who’s coming off a great season for the 49ers. There was a discussion about Trey Lance not being named as the captain only because of the position he plays.
Trey Lance will have the third start of his career against the Chicago Bears in the first game of the season. Has Kyler Shanahan made the right decision or not will be determined by how Trey Lance performs this season. A lot is riding on the young man’s shoulders.
