Starting from commentators, coaches, and fans, all criticized Malkin for his behavior and lack of sportsmanship amid a critical game against the Flyers. The disgruntled player was sent to the locker room to cool himself down for the rest of the minutes.
Evgeni Malkin staggeringly became the first player this 2022-23 season to acquire 28 minutes penalty in a single game. It surely is not a record to get praised for, as fans have been on rage on social media. Regardless of the Penguins’ drama on ice involving Malkin, the team racked up points demolishing the Flyers in a 4-2 victory.
Pens winger Rickard Rakell played an immense part in the team’s victory, as he led the team to a 3-0 lead at PPG Paints Arena. Prior to the game, the team also celebrated Kris Letang reaching the 1000th game. Their current win secured the last spot in the Eastern Conference, leading Florida Panthers with 1 point in standing.
Pens coach Mike Sullivan stated that despite minor penalties that the center racked up, NHL officials also assessed him for unsportsmanlike behavior. Sullivan stated, “He got high-sticked, and they didn’t see it”.
“My sense is that he was upset because he got three (earlier) minor penalties, one of which was a high stick, and then when he gets high-sticked, they didn’t see it.”
“He’s obviously an emotional guy. His emotions got the best of him in that circumstance. (Malkin) and I will have a conversation about that. He’s got to do a better job of controlling his emotions, because we need him. But he’s an emotional guy, and the stakes are high right now.”
Casey DeSmith stopped 31 of 33 shots by the Flyers, leading the Penguins to their 4-2 win. Penguins forward, Bryan Rust said, “We’ll take the wins right now. Obviously, there are some things we need to clean up”.
“We’ve got to stop getting that deer-in-the-headlight look in the third period there.” “We’re doing whatever we can to try to make it into the playoffs. We know that it’s tough here. There’s teams on our heels” . “Every point matters.”
