The NHL star and the Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid got his limelight stolen by Dallas Stars forward, Jason Robertson in the 2022-23 National Hockey League regular season. Jason, nicknamed “Robo” started his professional career after the team chose him during the 2017 NHL Draft.

He was the Calder Memorial Trophy runner-up after making his way to the Stars opening night with 17 goals and 28 assists in 51 games. His offensive strive continued throughout the 2021-22 season, becoming the first Stars player to record consecutive hat-tricks in games.

Including the recent play against the Anaheim Ducks, Robertson has scored 22 goals in 24 of his last games. Due to his explosive start early in the season, he is one of the top Hart Trophy candidates. When compared with the veteran star Connor McDavid, it can be said that Robertson is schooling the young Oilers captain.

The Athletics Dom Luszczyszyn made predictions, according to HockeyFeed stating, “At the top of that list is Jason Robertson who has scored more goals than McDavid and is just three points behind him. What currently gives Robertson the edge is his play at five-on-five at both ends of the ice where the Stars have seen massive value.”

“With Robertson on the ice, the Stars have earned 58 percent of the expected goals and have outscored opponents 24-11. With McDavid, the Oilers are at 52 percent and have been outscored 16-14. At five-on-five, Robertson is personally outscoring McDavid 19 to 11.”

Undoubtedly, McDavid’s experience and leadership can’t be calculated by such statements, but it is also valid that ‘Robo’s starting off has set quite a pace in his favor. Though this is hockey what we are talking about, anything can change with a slight movement of the player.

The 2022-23 season is still far from over, it will be interesting to see if Robertson can keep up his stride against the well-praised McDavid or if will he crumble sometime in between. While Robertson is one of the candidates for the Hart Trophy, McDavid is on top of his race for it.

It was recorded that in 152 games played by both players, Robertson has the upper hand with 80 goals, and 84 assists in 164 points, whereas McDavid recorded 56 goals and 117 assists in 173 points. Currently, Robertson may not jump up to McDavid’s tier, but he is emerging as a demon in the game.
