December is surely a month of celebration, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane get ready for their 1000th game with the Chicago Blackhawks. The captain and the alternate captain have come a long way from winning three Stanley Cup Championships together in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Though this isn’t all.
They have accumulated scores and fame almost together and have been playing the roles of a teammate, rival, and a brother. Now with Christmas approaching and their 1000th game on Sunday, the Blackhawks are sure that they’ll set the arena on fire.
The games that these duo played together put the Blackhawks with a score of 530-346-123 with 298 goals approximately. Toews with the help of Kane scored 116 goals and Kane scored 101 goals where Toews assisted. They’ve played 620 regular-season games where they’ve been on the same line for 30 seconds or more.
Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane share thoughts on each other
On Sunday, they’ll open their 1000th game against the New York Rangers at United Center. When asked how Kane felt now that they’re close to another milestone, he replied jokingly that it’s more like “2000” than their 1000th game.
Toews laughingly stated, “Yeah, I’d agree with that statement”. “I guess moments where you think of memories or you see a clip from years past and it looks like it’s from another era almost, but at the same time, it’s almost Christmas already and it’s another year where it’s flying by.”
“That’s the thing, you have to try and slow things down and appreciate and not take things for granted even though you’re so much in a rhythm.”
“But at the same time, it’s been pretty special to share the ride and be a Blackhawk for as long as I have and have done it with ‘Kaner’ the whole time. It’s been pretty special and we’re both pretty thankful for everything that’s happened.”
Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are the 11th pair to play their 1000th NHL regular-season games and 2nd active players after Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty and forward Anze Kopitar. From 2009 to the present they have played 1,028 games. Another duo that can be added to the group would be defenceman Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, playing 1,069 games together from 2006 to 2020.
Former Blackhawks assistant coach Mark Crawford commented, “I see the relationship as similar to brothers,”. “…they really care for each other in a funny sort of way. They push each other and want to outdo each other. That part is really good.”
Crawford further stated that Kane and Toews’ attitude toward each other is somewhat similar to former Vancouver Canucks forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedins. Though they are practically brothers and teammates donning the same team jersey, they have never forgotten that they are each other’s rivals too. They both help improve each other by the day.
