Former National Hockey League player Zdeno Chara notes how excited he is to suit up for the charity game alongside Hall of Famer Ray Bourque. It’s been a while since he last held his hockey stick prior to retiring on 20 September 2022. The duo participated in the Nathan H. Hardy Memorial Alumni Game held at Warrior Ice Arena.
It was his first debut game since Chara’s one-day contract signing and retiring as a part of the New York Islanders. Chara who geared up for the Bruins charity game was the former captain of the NHL team. He led the team to win the Stanley Cup in 2011 run while captaining his team for 14 seasons.
Chara noted, “Absolute honor”. “Such a legend of the sport, for the city, for the organization. Even if it’s just a charity game, a game for a good cause, it’s such a privilege and honor to be on the same team with so many guys who played for a long time and did so many good things. Very humble about it.” On the other hand, Ray added, “It’ll be fun. I hope their expectations aren’t too high on my game.”

The charity game was held to help organizations like the Boston Bruins Foundation, Warrior for Life Fund, Fisher House Boston, and Operation Hat Trick. The game was participated by the Bruins competing against the active and inactive members of the Navy to honor Chief Special Warfare Operator Nate Hardy.
The 45-year-old defenceman, Zdeno Chara retired after playing 1,680 NHL games with 680 points in 209 goals and 471 assists for the Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Bruins, and Washington Capitals. He recorded 70 points in 200 Stanley Cup games with 18 goals and 52 assists. He stated, “I haven’t skated since my last game”.
“It’s nice to be considered to be a young fella. It’s nice to be experiencing again that type of routine, being in the locker room with teammates, getting ready for the game, even if it’s not as big or as real, but still it’s nice.”
Ray stated after watching the recent Bruins regular-season games, “They’re just on a roll.” “They really look legit. They’re solid in all areas, from goaltending out. Their ‘D.’”
“And to do what they did since the beginning of the season, with what they had to start with, in terms of three key guys — regulars — out of their lineup, some big parts.”
“To find a way to win and play well really says a lot about this group, not that you’re surprised, because this group has done an amazing job for many years now. As a fan and an ex-Bruin, it’s fun to watch. Can’t wait to see what happens.”
