Former Real Madrid defender and four times Champions League winner Sergio Ramos has finally put pen to paper on an offer made by the French heavyweights Paris Saint Germain, bringing an end to all the speculations going around about his new destination.
Sergio Ramos failed to renew his contract within the stipulated time with Real Madrid this year, with his previous contract running down on 1st July. Ramos had many offers from Premier League and also from former club Sevilla, but decided to join PSG for a new challenge in a new atmosphere.
“I am very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain,” Sergio Ramos after signing a two year contract with PSG
Ramos has reportedly signed a two-year contract with the Ligue 1 giants and will stay at the the club until June 30, 2023.
Sergio Ramos brings the quality of leadership at the back for Paris, which was much lacking after the departure of Thiago Silva to Chelsea for free last year. The addition of Ramos will also strengthen the Paris backline of Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe, as the French club eye for their first Champions League title.
Ramos, who holds the legendary status at Real Madrid, had proved himself as arguably one of the best defenders in the world over his 16 seasons with the Blancos. He netted 101 goals in 671 matches and was a pivotal figure at the back, saving Madrid with his clinical last ditch challenges as well as scoring crucial goals which have given Madrid a breather time to time.
Ramos captained Real Madrid from 2015 to 2021 after the retirement of Iker Casillas and helped the Merengues to win 4 UEFA Champions League between 2014 and 2018 and 5 La Liga titles during his stint with the club.
Ramos also had a very decorated and a highly illustrious career with his the national team Spain, with whom he won a World Cup in 2010 and two European Championships 2008 and 2012. Ramos also holds the record for the most appearances in the national outfit, amassing 180 games, becoming the most capped player with the national team in Europe.
“I am very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain,” Ramos stated in his first interview signing for PSG, after he completed his medical and signed his contract.
“It is a big change in my life, a new challenge and a day that I will never forget. I am proud to be part of this very ambitious project, to join a team with great players. It’s a club that has already proven at the highest level with solid foundations. I want to continue to grow with Paris and help the team work to win titles.” Ramos added.
“Paris today welcomes one of the greatest players of our time. We are happy to announce that Sergio Ramos is joining us. Sergio is a complete footballer, one of the best defenders in history. He is a born competitor, a leader and a great professional. His great experience and his ambitions are in perfect harmony with those of the club. I am proud to see him in the Paris Saint-Germain jersey and I know our supporters will give him a fantastic welcome.” PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi expressed his happiness on Ramos’ addition.
