The countdown for the next Olympics games is well and truly underway. The marquee event which is scheduled to take place in Paris next year, has already seen the players start their preparations. However, on Tuesday some unsettling news emerged from the French capital which has taken the world by storm.
On Tuesday, the French police made a raid at the headquarters of the committee responsible for organizing the event. The official reports from Paris suggested that it was part of two “preliminary investigations“. These raids have been conducted after allegations of misuse of public funds and nepotism was done.
“Paris 2024 is cooperating actively with investigators to facilitate their enquires and provide answers to all the questions raised as quickly as possible,” the committee mentioned in a statement released later that day. This investigation has now led to questions regarding the ability of the city to host the iconic event.
IOC executive Christophe Dubi praises Paris Olympic committee for their handling of situation
This sudden development has left the fans speechless. Whether Paris will be stripped of the hosting rights is not confirmed as of yet. It is also unlikely for this to happen. Speaking on this issue, International Olympic Committe (IOC) executive Christophe Dubi praised the committee for their handling of the situation.
The top member of the IOC later claimed that they “have all the reasons to be confident” for coming clean in this matter. He also pointed out that Paris will definitely have no concerns about hosting the games in 2024. The timing of this raid has become crucial as it comes just a month after former president, Brigitte Henriques resigned from her post.
Henriques’ sudden leave from the post came as a shock to many. The reason for this decision by the former footballer is said to be due to the inner tensions among the Olympic committee members. The French Olympic body refused to give any explanation regarding this choice of hers. She assumed this huge role in June 2021.
This is however not the first time the Olympics has been charged with financial charges. The governing body was accused of serious charges of bribery during the Tokyo Olympics. The event which is set to commence from July 26 next year, might face some changes if the consequences of the investigation are serious. It would be wise to wait for the official investigation to conclude before making any comments.
